UNICEF in Chhattisgarh on Satuday announced popular film actor, singer and Padma awardee Anuj Sharma as its state ‘Celebrity Advocate’ for promoting the rights of children. He is the first UNICEF ‘Celebrity Advocate’ from Chhattisgarh. Anuj Sharma will support UNICEF in creating awareness and in promoting health, nutrition, sanitation, education and protection of children in the state. He would also support in the efforts for COVID prevention.
Welcoming Anuj Sharma as the ‘Celebrity Advocate’ of UNICEF in Chhattisgarh, Job Zachariah, Chief of UNICEF in Chhattisgarh said “As a popular film actor, singer and film director, Anuj Sharma is a powerful and influential voice in the state. He will be able to urge parents, caregivers and policymakers to provide better health, nutrition and education for children in the most marginalized households in Chhattisgarh. An icon of the youth, Anuj Sharma would be able to amplify the voice of the youth and adolescents, besides helping in the efforts in their empowerment and engagement”
Anuj Sharma said, “I am very pleased to collaborate with UNICEF as its state ‘Celebrity Advocate’. I strongly believe that every child deserves a better start in life. No child should be malnourished and lose a life from preventable diseases. With UNICEF, I would like to support every child, especially in the most vulnerable areas, so that they are born in a safe and protected environment and are healthy, nourished, nurtured, protected and learning”.
Anuj Sharma has been supporting UNICEF in Chhattisgarh by sharing key information on the wellbeing of children through his social media platforms and public appeals.
Anuj Sharma is considered as the superstar of Chhattisgarhi film industry, which is also referred to as “Chhollywood”. He has completed 20 years in Chhattisgarhi cinema and has acted in more than 40 films in Chhattisgarhi, Sambalpuri, Jharkhandi, Bundelkhandi, Gujarati, and Bhojpuri languages.
His debut film ‘Mor Chhainha Bhuinya’ in 2000 was the first blockbuster movie in Chhattisgarhi language. Mr Sharma was awarded the best actor award nine times for his portrayal in the movies. Anuj Sharma was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri by Government of India in 2014.
A multi-faceted personality, Anuj Sharma is also a film director, singer, music composer, and stage show performer. As a Chhattisgarhi folk singer, he has made over 100 video albums and audio albums. Mr Sharma’s stage shows are hugely popular in India and abroad. Anuj was also instrumental in popularizing Chhattisgarhi folk music across the globe through his band Aarug, the untouched.
Anuj Sharma is married to Dr Smita and they have two young daughters- 11-year old Anumita and 7-year old Aarug.
