The Economic Offences wing/Anti-Corruption Bureau (EOW/ACB) of Chhattisgarh Police on Friday arrested three persons including dismissed sub-inspector (SI) in Chhattisgarh police and suspended assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in EOW/ACB for blackmailing and extorting government officials and employees posing themselves as close aides of EOW/ACB officials in the state.
EOW/ACB Superintendent of Police Pankaj Chandra said that the arrested accused identified as dismissed SI Satyendra Singh Verma, suspended EOW/ACB ASI Vinod Verma and RTI activist-cum-scribe Rakesh Tarate have been taken into custody.
The dismissed SI Verma was posted in the Chhattisgarh Police and he was dismissed in a similar bribery case.
He blackmailed a Patwari posted in Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara district and demanded Rs 5 lakh to settle Patwari’s case at the office of EOW/ACB.
Patwari had lodged complaint with EOW/ACB and local police in this regard. The dismissed SI Verma was arrested from Baloda Bazar-Bhatapara.
Similarly, RTI activist-cum scribe Rakesh had extorted Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000 from sub-divisional officer (SDO) and forester, both posted in forest department in Raipur. Both the forest officials lodged their complain with EOW/ACB and civil lines police in the state capital.
Also, the suspended assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in EOW/ACB Vinod Verma and his accomplices blackmailed and extorted a forest officer of Rs 10 lakh. The forest officer had lodged complain in this regard with EOW/ACB and Tikrapara police.
A case under section 384 for extortion read with section 34 for common intention by several persons was lodged against them and started a probe.
Based on the caller detailed record (CDR) data, all the accused were arrested. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
